40 Days of Prayer
As part of our Lent programme, we invite you to join us experimenting with prayer for 40 days. From 27th February 2012 - 8th April 2012, there will be a suggestion each day for a way that you can pray. Some may not work for you, but we are sure others will offer you a rich blessing. You can follow us through the 40 days by:
- Bookmarking this web page (press 'Ctrl + D') and visiting every day;
- Subscribing to the RSS feed;
- Liking us on Facebook;
- Downloading a PDF copy of the full schedule here;
- Collecting a paper copy of the full schedule from the St Thomas' or St Stephen's buildings.
Our Twitter @STwSS account will be up and running shortly.
Let us know how you get on and tell us about any particular blessing that comes your way.
Day 41 - 7 April 2012
Every time you have a minute of boring wait, in queues, for the bus, in lifts etc. remember that God is with you. This is called practicing the presence of God.
Day 40 - 6 April 2012
Reflect on the cross for 5 minutes: But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God's side and put your lives together, whole and holy in his presence. You don't walk away from a gift like that! (Colossians 1.21)
Day 39 - 5 April 2012
Say arrow prayers throughout the day today (God help me, may this meeting go well, bless my children) Like Nehemiah in his book 2.4. It would be good to read chapter 1 as well to get the background story!
Day 37 - 3 April 2012
Psalm 46.10 ‘Be still and know that I am God’. Take a moment out of the day and try to be still.
Day 36 - 2 April 2012
Practice fasting: Skip one meal, or all food for the day, or eat simply, such as just bread at each meal time. Use the time to pray, use your hunger to express your hunger for God and to pray for those who really are hungry.
Day 33 - 30 March 2012
Reflect on the cross for 5 minutes: Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we're a free people—free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free! (Ephesians 1.17)
Day 32 - 29 March 2012
James 1.5 says ask for wisdom. Do so for all the situations and people you may come across today.
Day 30 - 27 March 2012
Pray for your boss/teacher/line manager/foreman if you are working that God will bless them today. If you don’t work pray for someone you will meet today.
Day 29 - 26 March 2012
Pray Samuel’s prayer in 1 Samuel 3.9 ‘Speak Lord your servant is listening’. Throughout the day try to reflect on thoughts and ideas that come into your mind. They may well be God!
Day 27 - 24 March 2012
Take a walk along your street and pray that God might bless everyone who lives in it.
Day 26 - 23 March 2012
Reflect on the cross for 5 minutes: “God didn't, and doesn't, wait for us to get ready... But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.” (Romans 5.8)
Day 25 - 22 March 2012
Think of one person to pray for today and try to remember them throughout the day.
Day 24 - 21 March 2012
1 Peter 5.7 says cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares for you. Do it!
Day 22 - 19 March 2012
Read the Lord’s prayer slowly thinking of what each phrase means (Matthew 6.9-13).
Day 20 - 17 March 2012
If you have a little more time today go to the Church of England website and read/pray either the morning or evening prayer.
Day 19 - 16 March 2012
Reflect on the cross for 5 minutes: "God brought you alive—right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant cancelled and nailed to Christ's cross". Colossians 2.13.
Day 16 - 13 March 2012
An evening prayer:
Reflect back on the day: when were the moments you met with God’s grace (recognised or not at the time)? Give thanks in response.
Day 15 - 12 March 2012
Reflect on your need for forgiveness. Jesus says we should love God, love our neighbour and ourselves. (Matthew 12.29-31). How well have you done each?
Day 13 - 10 March 2012
Listen to a worship song or a hymn on CD or from the internet. Premier Radio both on internet and on 1305, 1332, 1413 MW often plays worship songs along with Christian teaching.
Day 12 - 9 March 2012
Reflect on the cross for 5 minutes: "Now because of Christ—dying that death, shedding that blood—you who were once out of it altogether are in on everything." Ephesians 2.13.
Day 11 - 8 March 2012
Pray that God's Holy Spirit will fill you today with his love. Look up Roman's 5:5.
Day 10 - 7 March 2012
Set your Outlook/mobile phone to beep every hour today and each time reflect that God is with you and be thankful.
Day 08 - 5 March 2012
Say grace before each meal with your family, if you can. Keep it simple: 'Thank you God for this food. Amen'. Try to do this regularly from now on.
Day 06 - 3 March 2012
Remember that God is your father and think throughout the day what this means to you.
Day 05 - 2 March 2012
Reflect on the cross for five minutes: “This is love—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they've done to our relationship with God” (1 John 4.10).
Day 04 - 1 March 2012
Read a newspaper or watch the news. Pray for one thing that gets your attention. 'May your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven'.
Day 03 - 29 February 2012
Go outside and walk around for five minutes praising God for the beauty of his creation.
Day 02 - 28 February 2012
Find a quiet spot and light a candle. As you focus on it, remember that Jesus is the light of the world, (John 8.12) and he is with you.
Day 01 - 27 February 2012
Try repeating this traditional prayer throughout the day, whenever a quiet moment or space comes in your day: 'Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.'
