A Walk Through Holy Week

Daily reflections as we journey through the different events of Holy Week.

We are thrilled you are taking A walk through Holy Week with us as a Church Family. Starting on Palm Sunday with the  triumphal entry of Jesus  into Jerusalem through to the celebration of  his resurrection on Easter Sunday. We will be looking at one key event from each of the days through Holy Week.

His procession into Jerusalem, clearing the temple on Monday, encountering the widow at the temple on Tuesday, being anointed at the home of Simon the leper on Wednesday, the Garden of Gethsemane on Thursday, His crucifixion on Friday, the significance of Easter Saturday and finally  the empty tomb on Sunday.

Our hope is  these reflections will bring a renewed sense of the week and offer a starting point for your own personal reflections during this time.

SUNDAY

Palm Sunday

Jerusalem was a buzz. Jesus was coming. Many people had heard of him. He was the one who made the blind to see, raised the dead but also the one who threatened the power of the Pharisees. He was coming to keep the feast, but many were wondering what would he do when he finally gets here?

MONDAY

Jesus Clears the Temple

Today’s picture by Bernadette Lopez, captures the outrage Jesus felt when he entered the temple courts and the place where people from all over the civilised world came to pray and worship God, had now become a marketplace…

TUESDAY

A Widow gives all she has

During this week, Jesus continued to teach at the temple. He sat down opposite the treasury where he could also see the area of the temple called the Court of the Women. There were various boxes in this area for temple taxes and freewill gifts…

WEDNESDAY

Jesus is anointed at Bethany

This is a beautiful passage filled with poignant detail. Jesus is reclining at the table in the home of Simon the leper when a woman arrives carrying an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume which she breaks and pours over his head in an act of pure devotion leading to harsh criticism from those also present…

THURSDAY

The Garden of Gethsemane

Immediately, before Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane he was in the upper room with the disciples for the Passover feast. He knew exactly what was going to happen – he knew Peter was going to deny him and Judas would betray him...

FRIDAY

Good Friday

We have so many images of that painful and shocking event but there was something about the rawness of this image that is profoundly powerful. So many images give us a sanitized view of the crucifixion maybe because otherwise the horror would be unbearable to contemplate…

SATURDAY

A day of Rest, Prayer and Reflection

Holy Saturday is the day that is hard to define. It is both a continuation of the sorrow of Good Friday, but it is also filled with the expectation of the Resurrection. The disciples and those who loved Jesus must have grieved and felt the unbearable pain of loss as they tried to make sense of what had happened…

EASTER SUNDAY

Christ is Risen, Alleluia!

Easter Day has finally arrived, and we can celebrate because we know the ending and what it means for us and the world. The day is filled with expectation and the possibility of new beginnings as we seek to be released from the vestiges of our old self…
