There are a number of local initiatives that we support or have close links with. Some of these are listed below.
Clapham Park foodbank
The Clapham Park foodbank opened in February 2010; the first in Lambeth and one of the first in London. It currently helps over a thousand people a year who would otherwise go hungry. At STwSS we work with other local churches to support and run the Clapham Park foodbank.
You can support the foodbank by:
- Donating food- which can be left in the boxes near the welcome desks in both the St Thomas' and St Stephen's buildings;
- Volunteering at a Supermarket collection- speaking to shoppers about the foodbank and asking them to buy a few extra items to donate;
- Volunteering at the foodbank- organising the food, meeting and speaking with clients, and helping with administration.
The Clapham Park foodbank is open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 11.00am and 2.00pm, at The Bonneville Centre, 12 Poynders Road, Clapham Park, SW4 8NY. You can contact them by phoning 020 8675 7661 or emailing email@example.com.
Christians Against Poverty
Christians Against Poverty (CAP) offers free financial advice to anyone in need, irrespective of race, gender or belief. They are passionate about releasing people in the UK from a life sentence of debt, poverty and their causes. They work with churches to offer free debt help, job clubs and CAP money courses. At STwSS, we have partnered with CAP to offer a free money course to teach people how to budget. Check out the homepage to see if there is one coming up or head to www.capmoney.org to search for the next available course near you. If you are struggling with debt or know someone who is, call CAP on 01274 760 720 or contact a nearby CAP debt centre.
Providence House is a Christian Mission that has been working among young people and families in the housing estates around Clapham Junction for over 50 years.
Robert and Susan Musgrave have been involved with Providence House for several decades.
Providence House serves the local community through: open youth clubs, children and families work, Sunday mission work, and activities in the local community. On the first Sunday of each month, Providence House holds ‘Sunday First’, an afternoon where everyone, any age, is welcome to join in an informal Christian meeting.
In addition, Providence House runs a programme of residential visits to East Shallowford Farm on Dartmoor, to provide enriching experiences for inner city young people.
Providence House has been supported by the church for over 30 years.
